While serving a warrant for Libao Zheng at his home in the 1300 block of King Place in North Philadelphia he opened fire at PPD officers around 6:06 a.m. on Jan. 31, the police detailed in multiple releases.
One officer suffered "a graze wound to the right hand" after the bullet ricocheted off his ballistic vest. The officer was taken to Jefferson Hospital and later released, Commissioner Kevin Bethel explained.
SWAT was called to the scene, two suspects were taken into custody, and the scene was held and secured for further investigation.
In addition to the warrant on drug charges, Zheng has been charged with criminal attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault on a member of law enforcement, simple assault, and weapons offenses, his latest court docket shows.
He has been held on $1 million in bail at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility and his preliminary hearing has been set before Judge David H. Conroy at 9 a.m. on Feb. 15, according to his court docket.
"My officer's Level-3 vest stopped the bullet, but it still ricocheted into his hand. I am proud of the bravery that our men and women show each and every day. They will NOT be deterred," Bethal said, adding "and they will not stop in our mission to make this a safer city for everyone. We remain grateful for your support and partnership as our officer recovers, and as we continue work together for the betterment of Philadelphia."
